Sudanese rivals in Saudia Arabia sign deal raising hopes for ceasefire 

JEDDA, MAY 11, 2023 (SUDANS POST – The rival Sudanese parties have just signed a document in Saudi Arabia, committing to protecting of civilians and upholding the unity of the country, sources with direct knowledge have told Sudans Post.

Under the terms of the document officially known as Jedda Declaration of Principles, the Sudanese army and the RSF pledged their commitment to refrain from engaging in any further attacks that could harm the country’s civil population.

“This agreement is crucial and underscores the collective determination to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Sudanese population, preventing any further suffering caused by violence,” one source attending the talks just said on phone.

The parties also expressed unwavering dedication to the unity of Sudan and their pledge to work tirelessly in the interest of the Sudanese people.

“This commitment aims to foster national harmony and solidarity, ensuring that Sudan’s diverse communities can live together peacefully and prosperously,” the source added.

Sudan descended into violence last month after the RSF launched attacks on several army and government positions in the capital Khartoum. Civilians have been caught in the conflict and regional and international calls for a credible ceasefire have fallen on deaf ears.

The signing of the principle is widely seen as an important step towards a cessation of hostility agreement between the parties.
