Sabir Abdallah was found guilty of the rape and murder of Abuk Lual in Ayuang neighborhood of Aweil. The crime sparked widespread outrage and led to the destruction of Sudanese-owned shops in the area.
Authorities called for calm at the time and assured residents that the law would take its course.
Abdallah and his accomplices were transferred to Wau, which serves as the regional court for the Bahr el Ghazal region. His accomplices were released after investigations.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal State police spokesperson, Captain Guot Guot Akol, confirmed the impending execution in an interview with Sudans Post today, saying during the earlier hours of Wednesday that the sentence will be implemented today.
“Yeah, the procedures are continuing, he will be hanged today. People are still speculating for nothing, even the governor went to Wau yesterday, and even the mother is now in Wau to witness it being hanged,” he said.
Akol dismissed rumors that Abdallah had been released and escaped, urging the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
“They will see, and they will hear from people they know. People believe in rumors, and if they insist on doing that they will hear today,” he said.
Residents of Aweil, the capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, expressed hope that the execution would ease tensions stemming from the crime.
Others said that no amount of peace efforts could undo the damage caused by Abdallah’s actions, particularly the manner in which he killed and dismembered the young girl.
Some residents emphasized the importance of execution as a demonstration of justice and the rule of law.
