KHARTOUM – The Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council Abdelfattah al Burhan has said that elections will be open to all partners in the transitional period including the political forces, the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
This means that the top Sudanese commander and his deputy General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo can participate in the elections in contrary to an earlier promise that they won’t take part in the elections.
According to the AFP, Burhan said “the elections will be open to all political forces participating in the transition, the military and the Rapid Support Forces.
Sudan has been in a shaky transition since the ouster of long-time dictator Omar el Bashir in a popular uprising in April 2019 after more than 30 years in power.
Al Burhan replaced General Awad Ibn Ouf who had stayed as leader of the military council for just one day before announcing his resignation.
He has since been in an alliance with leaders of civilian groups who mobilized for ouster of al Bashir, but he has been accused of hijacking the transition.
