AWEIL – A 17-year-old boy stabbed his peer, identified as Kuol Deng, to death on Tuesday in Aweil town, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, but a source from Mathiang neighborhood, where the incident occurred, suggested the dispute involved money for a motorbike.
Garang Mou Aher, who lives with the two boys, told this outlet that the disagreement over the motorbike money escalated into a heated argument between the victim and the suspect, Majak Majok.
Mou said the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Kuol Deng in the chest, killing him instantly.
“The whole neighborhood is shocked by this incident,” he said. “It’s a sad moment for us at Mathiang as tensions are high between the two families. The family of the victim is still trying to take matters into their own hands. We are working around the clock to diffuse the tension.”
Aher added that the police were dispatched to the scene, and the suspect is currently in custody while authorities investigate the matter further.
The source called on both families to prioritize unity and peaceful coexistence and respect the law.
Incidents of killings are common in parts of South Sudan, often linked to economic instability and deteriorating conditions.
