JUBA – Mobile network operators in South Sudan are facing scrutiny over the increasing rate of dropped calls.

The National Parliament has formed a nine-member committee to investigate allegations of cheating through dropped calls by the communications network operators.

This action follows a motion raised last month by Juol Nhomngek, an SPLM-IO legislator representing Lakes State’s Cueibet County.

Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, formed the nine-member committee headed by Mary Nyaulang, with Paul Baba Ezbon as her deputy.

The committee, established on August 27, 2024, is tasked with investigating urgent and important allegations of malpractices within the country’s telecommunication network companies.

A report presented by Nhomngek accused network operators of extorting money from citizens by imposing high consumption rates for airtime and data bundles.

It alleged that MTN South Sudan and its partner ZTE Corporation, a technology firm partially owned by the Chinese government, have been illegally collecting $50,000 and a 10% Purchase Order in cash from subcontractors before awarding subcontracts.

Last month, MTN, Zain, and Digital South Sudan announced a second phase of tariff adjustments, effective August 1, 2024, in line with the latest exchange rate regulations set by the Bank of South Sudan and the National Communications Authority (NCA).

This adjustment led to increased costs for mobile airtime and internet data bundles.

The telecom companies justified the decision by stating that they aim to support continued investment in advanced technology, ensure network reliability, and enhance customer service.

However, citizens criticized the move, arguing that expensive tariffs would hinder effective communication and social activities.

Hello 👋 South Sudan national assembly headed by the speaker Hon: Jemma Nunu Kumba and other parliamentarians, I comment with a great happiness and show patriotism as done by Rh Juol Nhomngek.
The motion been raised really 💯 must be settled because we the citizens or the indigenous people of South Sudan 🇸🇸 are suffering seriously from this inflation.

starvation is rampantly occuring and again conflicts with communications, we the students are even dropping out of school of airtime and data is also constituting to such
why am I talking about such scenarios, research needs good data bundles but is very expressive which has made me to rethinking that there’s already a coldy war in my country.
these people fight indirectly and illegally amounting to economic hardship that brought a lot of problems to our citizens as well as the government.
therefore, issues must solved by the national government immediately.

And a special Credit goes to Hon Juol Nhomngek for detecting and alerting the citizens’ concerns.
God awards you with more knowledge
congratulations 👏👏 to Hon Jemma (Speaker) for forming the nine comprised committee.
