KHARTOUM – The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their allies have expanded the territory they control in Sudan through recent advances in North Kordofan, including Friday’s capture of Sodari town. These gains are reflected in the updated territorial control map above for September 2026.
The map shows the army holding much of northern, central and eastern Sudan, including Khartoum, Port Sudan and the main cities along the Nile. Its recent operations have extended that control farther west, into areas the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) retained after earlier military setbacks.
The latest advance came on Friday, September 25, when army troops and fighters from the Joint Force of former Darfur rebel movements captured Sodari, the administrative headquarters of the locality bearing the same name. The capture extends the army’s gains in northwestern North Kordofan, although RSF forces remain elsewhere in the locality.
Farther west, most of Darfur remains under RSF control, with exceptions including parts of Dar Zaghawa in the region’s northwest. The paramilitary’s losses in North Kordofan have not displaced it from its main territorial stronghold in western Sudan.
Other areas outside RSF control include parts of Jebel Marra and Tawila, where the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed al-Nur maintains control. These areas form a separate zone from territory held by either the RSF or the Sudanese army and its allies.
In Blue Nile State, the RSF has also established a territorial presence alongside the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu. Their advances in the south are reflected on the map as areas held by the allied forces.
Among their recent gains was the capture of the Jabal Kadam army garrison in the Bakori area on September 16. Sudan War Monitor verified footage showing RSF fighters inside the military positions. The advance followed earlier gains by the alliance and increased pressure on army positions protecting Damazin and Roseires.
