FANGAK – Thiang-Nuer Community’s newly elected Chairperson in Fangak County of Jonglei State pledged to work in collaboration with Thiang Nuer Youth, Intellectuals, Elders, and traditional Chiefs for internal reconciliation within the Thiang-Nuer Community.

Speaking during an inauguration ceremony held in Old Fangak on 30th October 2020, Mr. Simon Gai Kuol thanked the Community for giving him a chance to serve as its Chairperson.

“Thank you very much for giving me a chance to lead you as your Chairperson. During my tenure as Thiang Community’s Chairperson, I will work hand in hand with you the youth, intellectuals, Community’s Elders and traditional chiefs on how to internally secure a complete reconciliation within our Community because the deadly revenge attacks that occurred between the two Liep Community’s sub-sections and we witnessed were not good at all,” he said.

Mr. Simon Gai, who himself is a youth, described those revenge killings carried by the youth in the months of May and August respectively this year as unfortunate.

“As Thiang-Nuer Community Chairperson, I will work to make sure that the youth members, elders traditional Chiefs are actively engaged with meetings discussing how best to restore an internal harmony, peace and reconciliation within Thiang Nuer Community, particularly between the two sub-sections of Liep extended-Families,” he said.

Mr. Simon Gai also pledged to maintain and encourage the peaceful coexistence between Thiang-Nuer Community and all its immediate neighboring communities; namely Lak-Nuer Community of Fangak County, Dinka Padang of Pigi County and Gawaar-Nuer Community of Ayod County.

“I would like to assure you that in my capacity as Thiang Community’s Social Leader, I will also work hard to maintain our historical and well-placed peaceful coexistence with our immediate neighboring communities like Dinka, Gawaar and Lak,” he said

Conclusively Mr. Kuol urged South Sudan’s leadership to implement the R-ARCSS in good faith if they want peace in every corner of this country.

“In conclusion, I would like to make an appeal and request our country’s leadership to implement 2018 revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) in spirit and the letter. As the citizens of this country we are suffering because in practice there is no peace, the devastating floods which have now affected the general livelihoods, caused lack of food, starvation and diseases,” he said.

Mr. Simon Gai Kuol was elected Thiang- Nuer Community’s Chairperson in Old Fangak on 26th October 2020 replacing former Chairperson, Mr. Isaac Tut Machar who came down after his term of office has expired. The names of the newly elected members to lead Thiang Community are as follow:

Simon Gai Kuol, Chairperson

Lony Riek Lew, Deputy Chairperson

Simon Kun Tutkuai, Secretary General

Paul Puot Manyun, Secretary of Finance
