Makuac said the first incident occurred at 5:30 am on July 18th, when fighting erupted between sub-clans in Rumbek North.
Two brothers, Malaat Puoric Anyuon and Chol Puoric Anyuon, were injured in the violence, which Makuac attributed to a long-standing inter-clan feud.
“According to the information we have, the fighting was a revenge attack over someone who was killed in inter-clan fighting a long time ago,” Makuac said.
The brothers were evacuated to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment, while the suspects fled the scene. Security forces are pursuing them for arrest and investigation.
Later that same day, another shooting occurred in Thou-bor village. An unidentified gunman shot Marial of Machir, a relative of paramount chief Mabor Dhieu, at around 8:00 am, Makuac said. This incident was also reportedly motivated by revenge for a previous wounding.
“The suspect is still at large,” Makuac said. “Security forces are pursuing the perpetrator for arrest and investigation.”
Makuac expressed confidence that all perpetrators would be apprehended. “We don’t have a time limit,” he said. “We will continue to follow them until they are brought to justice.”
Makuac urged residents of Lakes State to abandon the practice of revenge killings.
“This revenge is totally unacceptable,” he said. “People should report crimes to the police, who will investigate and bring perpetrators to court.”
Makuac warned that revenge attacks create a cycle of violence. “If you take revenge, it will not end,” he said. “It will just continue endlessly.”
He called on local communities to cooperate with security forces to apprehend criminals.
Doctor Terran Madit Terran, medical director at Rumbek State Hospital, confirmed receiving patients with gunshot wounds from Rumbek North County.
“We received four patients with various injuries,” Terran said. “One was shot in the limbs, another in the mouth. We stabilized their condition.”
Terran said a fifth patient arrived the following evening with a serious abdominal wound. He underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.
One critically wounded patient was transferred to Juba for further treatment at the family’s request. Another patient with a fractured limb was discharged after his condition stabilized and his family opted for traditional treatment.
