Tonj North commissioner dies aboard plane enroute to Juba from Cairo

KUAJOK – The Tonj North County Commissioner, Kur Kuch Angony, passed away on Friday while on a flight from Cairo to Juba, prompting the Warrap State government to declare three days of mourning.

William Wol Mayom, the Warrap State Minister of Information and Communication, confirmed Angony’s death, noting that the late commissioner was a decorated officer in the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

“The late Angony was a distinguished and dedicated officer who served his country with honor. In this time of mourning, the government of Warrap State stands in solidarity with the people of Tonj North County and the entire family of Kur Kuch Angony,” said Mayom in a statement.

Governor Kuol Muor Muor and the state government extended their sincere condolences to Angony’s family, friends, and colleagues.

They also announced that normal government duties would resume on August 3, 2024, after the mourning period.

Mayom described Angony as a God-fearing man who had a positive influence on those around him.

He revealed that the state government had made efforts to transfer Angony to Cairo for further treatment, hoping to save his life. Angony had been battling liver cancer for a long time.

“The late Angony dedicated most of his personal life to the government of Warrap State, and his departure surely leaves a void in our hearts due to the roles that he played in the government,” Mayom added.

Kur Kuch Angony, born in 1969, hailed from Lou Paher in Tonj North. He died at the age of 55 on August 30, 2024, aboard a Juba-bound plane from Cairo.

Angony was an active civil servant and politician, having participated in the war of liberation that led to South Sudan’s independence in 2011.

He is survived by five wives and several children.
