JUBA – A member of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) reported on Monday that a young man arrested on August 16, 2024, in Torit town, Eastern Equatoria State, by military intelligence has not been found.

Ichaa Joyce Adelio, TNLA MP representing Torit County, stated that the young man was allegedly arrested by military intelligence in the evening at 3 PM while watching football in a playground.

“The information I want to share with this house this morning concerns the forceful arrest and disappearance of one of my innocent constituents in Torit County, from Himodonge Payam,” Joyce raised this motion during a parliamentary sitting in Juba on Monday.

“The incident occurred on the 16th of this month. It was allegedly reported that he was arrested that evening at three while watching football in the playground,” Joyce said.

She explained that relatives searched all the cells in Juba and Torit but could not find him.

“The following day, he was said to have been brought to Juba. Relatives went and searched in all the cells within Juba and Torit. But his whereabouts are not known up to this time. And this arrest was made by the military intelligence within Torit County,” the statement added.

Joyce accused the military of intimidating and extorting money from female traders from Himodonge Payam.

“Women who are coming from the village within the payam, who are coming to sell their produce, to buy food for their children, considering this crisis that we are in, the military are intimidating them, even subjecting them to extortion,” she said.

“Up to now, as one of our speakers, the situation, the security in that payam and within Torit is not normal. So, I urge you, House, that something has to be done about such incidents.”
