JUBA – Sunday’s traffic accident involving a UN vehicle did not kill three people as initially reported by Sudans Post.

On Sunday, a police source claimed in a statement to Sudans Post that three people riding on a boda-boda were involved in a car accident and died.

The initial report said: “The accident, which took place on Sunday morning occurred reportedly after the UN vehicle with plate number UN-00559 tried to dodge a Boda-boda carrying two passengers along with the driver.”

However, UNMISS communication chief, Francesca Annemarie Mold, said in an email to Sudans Post that the three people didn’t die, but instead sustained light injuries and were rushed to hospital before they were discharged shortly.

She said the boda-boda was travelling on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred.

“Regrettably an UNMISS vehicle was involved in an accident with a boda-boda that was apparently travelling on the wrong side of the road. However, the story claims that three people were killed. This is incorrect,” Francesca said.

“No one died as a result of the accident. Three people were unfortunately injured but were treated and have since been released from hospital. A statement has been provided to police by the driver and UNMISS will cooperate with any investigation as it always does in these circumstances,” added Francesca.

The Sudans Post had initially contacted the police spokesman, General Daniel Justin, but could not reach him. An email on Tuesday could not also be replied by Martin.

However, in a phone call this morning, the police media official said he did not heard about the accident because he has been away from work for the last three days saying he has not been briefed.

“I have been at work for the last three days and I haven’t heard of any accident involving UNMISS,” Justin said.
