BENTIU – The Bentiu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp experienced a tragic and disturbing event on Wednesday, with two newborn infants found abandoned in separate drainages.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, community leader John Tot Riek confirmed these incidents, highlighting the ongoing issue of illegal abortions within the camp.

“Unidentified women abandoned infants inside sector two drainage today and sector one of the Bentiu IDP camp,” Mr. Riek stated.

He further revealed that the infant found in sector two was still alive and received medical attention at the MSF Holland Hospital.

Riek expressed concern about the illegality of these actions and emphasized the need for justice.

He confirmed that the police department’s criminal investigation unit, in collaboration with community watch groups, is actively searching for the women responsible.

“Those who are practicing illegal abortions are those who conceived accidentally cheating their husbands and their families without considering the laws,” Riek stated.

Colonel James Tut Chuol, Bentiu IDP camp’s joint police force commander, acknowledged both incidents and confirmed ongoing investigations.

“I am aware of abandoned infants today and yesterday another infant was found dead… serious searching is going on to find out those women who abandoned infants in water drainages,” the police officer said.

The camp has witnessed a concerning trend of illegal abortions, with over 21 cases recorded between 2016 and 2023.

This raises serious questions about the lack of access to reproductive healthcare and support systems for women within the camp.

you better pointed your fingers to NGOs who are dealing with family planning, they’re the ones creating more messes among the communities

dear community leader please point NGOs who are blind pooling community about family planning instead of talking about how to report them to police
