RUMBEK – Two people were killed and three injured when two boats collided in South Sudan’s Lakes State on Thursday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred near the border between Lakes State and Jonglei State, at a place called Pan-jai, according to Colonel Joseph Mayen Luk, the police chief inspector in Yirol East county.

“The two boats made an accident in this place, and it caused a death of two people,” Luk said. “The deceased are identified as Makat Kuernyang from Awerial, and the other person is Malaat Jok Mabor from Yirol East county.”

The injured people are Ngor Chok Marial, Maker Majier Mut, and Bakic Maker Mabor from Yirol East, as well as the driver from Bor county, Machiek Terekeka, and the driver from the Yirol East boat, Majak Akuc.

The survivors are receiving treatment in a hospital in Bor county, Luk said.

The cause of the accident was a collision at a junction where the two boats met, according to Luk.

He appealed to the authorities in Bor county to send the case to Lakes State so that the investigation can be completed in Yirol East county.

The commissioner of Yirol East county, Manyang Luk Lueth, confirmed the incident, saying that it happened when he was away from the county headquarters.

He said he had no details about where the boats came from.

Angelina Adhel, a civil society activist in Lakes State, expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and urged the state governments of Lakes and Jonglei to work together to find a hospital where the injured can receive treatment.
