Marko Mawein Madut, the county’s police inspector, provided an account of the incident in an interview with Sudans Post, stating that attackers ambushed herders grazing cattle in Kuen-Kar Thiit and attempted to steal around 100 cows.
“Madut said the attackers set a ploy to loot the hundred heads of cattle at Kuen-Kar Thiit in Tonj South County,” a statement from the Tonj South County Police Inspector’s office elaborated.
“These people were pursued and unfortunately, they were found to have taken the cattle at their back and ambushed people fought people till they killed two civilian people and a soldier with SSPDF uniform on,” he added.
Madut added that one of the attackers was also killed and was found wearing a South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) uniform.
Police are currently coordinating with authorities in neighboring Cueibet County, Lakes State, to employ means and ways of bringing back the cattle to the rightful owners.
Madut urged residents to be vigilant against raiders’ inherent culture of looting at broad daylight and nighttime.
They specifically requested the herders who are able-bodied to follow their cows and graze them themselves, instead of sending young boys ahead and attending to the cows later in the day.
“Such cases of cattle being looted have been rampant despite disarmament efforts being rendered year in, year out, and nobody knows why it is not taking shape or becoming into fruition,” he said.
