PORT SUDAN – The United States on Tuesday called on the Sudanese belligerents, the Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to immediately cease hostilities and uphold international legal obligations in protection of human rights.
The US embassy in a statement marking five years since the Sudanese revolution which resulted in the removal of long-time dictator Omar al Bashir, called on the two parties to allow humanitarian access for millions suffering as result of the war.
“Our message is clear: the SAF and RSF must end the fighting in Sudan, adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, respect human rights, and allow unhindered access to meet the increasingly dire humanitarian needs of Sudan’s people,” it said.
The embassy stressed the importance of a civilian-led transition, urging both military factions to refrain from seeking political influence.
“They must also refrain from seeking a role in post-conflict governance,” the statement emphasized, further noting the sacrifices made by Sudanese protestors in their pursuit of democracy.
“The United States will continue to make every effort to stop the fighting and continues to stand with the Sudanese people in their enduring aspiration for a democratic Sudan,” it added.
It said the incredible bravery and sacrifice displayed by protestors from all walks of life five years ago – especially women and youth – led to the beginnings of a democratic future which it said was frustrated by a military takeover in late 2021.
“However, the promise of that future has been denied to Sudan’s people time and again,” the statement said. “First, by the unconstitutional military takeover on October 25, 2021, and again by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that began on April 15, 2023.”
Highlighting the lack of a military solution, the embassy asserted that “There is no acceptable military solution to this conflict.”
“The only sustainable path forward is the one that acknowledges that Sudan’s political future belongs to Sudanese civilians,” the statement added.
This call comes amidst heightened tensions following the RSF’s takeover of Wad Madani, capital of Al-Gezira State, after a surprise withdrawal by SAF forces.
The Sudanese army claims in a statement released today that it is investigating the surprise withdrawal.
