JUBA, SEPTEMBER 19, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday met President Salva Kiir Mayardit and called for ‘swift’ implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, according to a statement.
Kiir travelled to New York, United States, leading South Sudan delegation to the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.
He is expected to meet world leaders during the trip.
“The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan,” the UN said in a statement following the meeting.
“The Secretary-General called for the swift implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and 2022 roadmap and reiterated the importance of conducting credible elections in South Sudan in December 2024,” it added.
The statement said that Guterres and Kiir “also discussed the country’s progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.”
It further said that Guterres “commended South Sudan’s efforts to resolve the conflict in the Sudan.”
“The Secretary-General and the President discussed the impact of the conflict in the Sudan on South Sudan, the sustainability of humanitarian assistance and the coordinated regional and international endeavours to end the conflict,” it added.
The revitalized peace agreement was signed in 2018, but its implementation has been slow and fraught with challenges.
The 2022 roadmap was designed to accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement, but it has also faced setbacks.
