JUBA – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has strongly denounced the killing of a South Sudanese staff member, Charles Kiir Gone, in Abiemnom County of the Ruweng Administrative Area.
Gone, a heavy vehicle operator serving with the peacekeeping mission in Wau, was reportedly attacked and killed by armed assailants at a relative’s home in Abiemnhom town, where he was staying.
UNMISS has extended its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Kiir’s family, friends, and colleagues, and has called upon local and state authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the incident.
Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNMISS, expressed shock and sorrow over the killing.
“We are shocked and saddened by the killing of our colleague and offer our sincere sympathy to his loved ones for their tragic loss,” he said.
“This incident illustrates the real and ongoing threat to the lives of UN peacekeepers supporting South Sudan on its journey towards peace as well as members of the communities we serve.”
Haysom further urged South Sudanese authorities to thoroughly investigate the crime and to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
The killing of Charles Kiir Gone underscores the persistent danger faced by UN peacekeepers and the communities they serve in South Sudan, highlighting the urgent need for continued efforts to foster peace and security in the country.
