Skinner made the pledge during a meeting with South Sudan’s minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Goc in Juba on Tuesday, where she presented her credentials.
Skinner’s arrival comes at a critical time for South Sudan, which is grappling with a cholera outbreak and recurring floods impacting vulnerable children and families. UNICEF’s work in the country focuses on various crucial areas impacting children’s well-being.
“This is a critical time for South Sudan. My heart is with the thousands of vulnerable children, mothers, young people, and families affected by the recent outbreak of cholera, as well as those impacted by recurring flooding across the country,” Skinner said.
“UNICEF’s work is supported by a passion for and commitment to children’s rights; working in partnership with the Government, line ministries, partners, and children and young people in health systems strengthening, access to education, child protection, WASH, and nutrition,” she said.
As UNICEF Representative to South Sudan, Skinner will provide strategic leadership to UNICEF’s efforts to improve essential social services for children, including child health and nutrition, access to quality education, safe water, and the protection of children and young women.
She will also lead work with an increased focus on the climate crisis and humanitarian needs under the leadership of the Government of South Sudan.
Skinner emphasized UNICEF South Sudan’s continued support for the Government of National Unity in prioritizing and delivering short- and long-term social services.
“In doing so, UNICEF will complement government efforts to provide humanitarian support to those most impacted by crises and ongoing development efforts,” she said.
I wish you have vacancy to recruit young lawyers like us and fight for children’s rights, women and venerable young people across South Sudan. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
