ABYEI – Members of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) were seen in photos posted on social media surrendering to Arab armed men in the disputed region of Abyei.
This comes days after Arab armed men attacked an area in the contested Abyei region killing around 32 people and wounding 24 other people.
The government in Juba formed an investigation committee to look into the matter with counterparts in Khartoum.
However, as condemnations surge over the attack, UN peacekeepers in Abyei were seen in photos posted on social media surrendering to armed men who appear to be members of the Arab Miseriya tribe.
Several social media users criticized the UN peacekeeping mission for surrendering to the armed Arab militia.
“How can they protect members of the opposition when they cannot protect themselves,” one social media user wrote in a post. “They have to be replaced if Abyei residents were to be safe.”
