The announcement followed a regular meeting of the council of ministers, which also endorsed state development projects.
Gatwich Biphal, the state minister of information, briefed the media on the new committee following the state cabinet meeting.
“The formation of the peace committee is to supervise the ongoing peace between locals of Unity State with Ruweng Administrative Areas and to oversee the endorsement of developmental projects in the state,” Biphal said.
The committee will be chaired by Malith Kak, advisor for peace and security in the Unity State government.
Its members include James Madut Ruei, Minister of Peace; Geng Kuony, Minister of Youth, Culture & Sport; Rose Nyeboth Toch, Minister of Gender and Social Welfare; a representative from the trade union; a representative from civil society organizations; and the Bishop of the Diocese of Bentiu, Christian Calasare.
Biphal explained that the committee will engage with a similar committee expected to be formed in the RAA.
“This committee formation is one of the resolutions adopted from the recent visit of the Chief of RAA, as well as agreed items to be observed by the two administrations,” he said.
The initiative aims to implement resolutions previously agreed upon by both administrations to foster peace and stability in the region.
