US special envoy for Sudan, South Sudan to travel to Juba tomorrow

JUBA – United States Special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan Donald E. Booth will travel, on Sunday, to South Sudan’s capital Juba for a four-day state-visit, according to a statement by the United States Department of State.

“U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan Donald Booth will travel to South Sudan from May 9 to May 13, 2021. Special Envoy Booth will hold meetings with government officials, political stakeholders, and civil society and international partners,” the US state department statement reads in part.

In the statement, the US State Department said the visit by the senior United States diplomat will showcase United States’ continued support for regional powers such as IGAD in its role as the main peace guarantor for the world’s youngest country.

“The Special Envoy’s travel underscores the United States’ commitment to work with IGAD and other regional and international partners to support peace and stability in South Sudan,” the statement said.

The statement further said Booth will discuss with senior government officials and parties to the revitalized peace agreement the implementation of the deal which is witnessing setbacks over lack of commitment from the parties.

“Of particular concern to the United States is the slow implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), ongoing violence, and deteriorating economic and humanitarian conditions,” the statement further added.
