Captain John Malith, spokesman for the Unity State police, told Sudans Post in an interview this yesterday that the violence broke out on Tuesday at the Rubkona-Bentiu Bridge. A group of youth en route on foot to Rubkona airport to welcome the governor began fighting among themselves.
“At least two people have sustained injuries,” Malith said, confirming there were no fatalities. He added that police had detained 20 young men from the groups involved in what he described as “unfortunate violence.”
“There was fighting between people who were coming from Guit County during the reception of the governor, H.E. Riek Biem, who was landing at Rubkona Airport. But this group, after they arrived at the Rubkona-Bentiu Bridge, they fought among themselves,” he explained.
“Because of that unfortunate fighting between these people, who were initially coming very happy to welcome the governor, two people were wounded. The two are currently being treated at Bentiu State Hospital and are expected to be released very soon because their wounds are not critical,” Malith added.
The police spokesman also revealed to Sudans Post those authorities had managed to arrest 20 people from the rival groups involved in the clash.
He indicated that local authorities were conducting an investigation to determine the reasons behind the altercation.
“The fighting took place at exactly 9:30 a.m. and continued for about an hour. The situation was finally brought under control when police intervened to calm things down. Thirteen people were arrested from one side and seven from the other,” he said.
“As I speak to you, these individuals are lawfully being held in police custody as we investigate why they engaged in the clash and attempted to disturb the public peace with unnecessary violence,” he concluded.
