JUBA — South Sudan’s Vice-President for Youth and Gender Cluster Mama Rebecca Garang has on Thursday met the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and discussed bilateral relations between the two countries.
Garang arrived in Japan on Wednesday after leaving Juba along with a high-level delegation that includes South Sudan’s foreign minister Beatrice Khamisa to witness the start of the Olympic Games that is kicking off this week.
In a statement by her office on Thursday evening, the vice-president met the Japanese premier and discussed maters related to bilateral ties between the two countries that will possibly sees South Sudan athletes trained by the Asian country.
“Today the Vice President and her delegation met with Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihide SUGA,” the statement by Garang’s office seen by Sudans Post reads in part.
“The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Japan and South Sudan, the training of more South Sudanese Athletes in Japan and promotion of peace through development,” the statement adds.
It further said “the Vice President will be in Japan for the next few days to attend the Opening Ceremony of #Tokyo2020Olympics, to support our national athletes and to conduct a series of sideline meetings with heads of state, missions and organisations.”
Japan has spent millions of dollars in aid on South Sudan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is currently constructing the Juba Freedom Bridge which was halted following the outbreak of the civil war in December 2013.
