VP Wani Igga orders Western Equatoria deputy governor to restore stability in Tambura

JUBA – South Sudan’s Vice President James Wani Igga has directed the newly-appointed Deputy Governor of Western Equatoria State, Elias Richard Box, to prioritize restoring peace and stability in the conflict-ridden Tambura County.

Wani issued the directive on Monday while speaking during the welcoming ceremony organized for newly-appointed SPLM officials, namely Central Equatoria State Governor Augustino Jadalla Wani, Box, and Gola Boyoi Gola, Chief Administrator of Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

“I want you to start your work by restoring peace and stability in Tambura with support from the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF),” Wani said.

He emphasized swift action, urging Box to “think outside the box” to achieve stability in Western Equatoria, making Tambura his “first assessment.”

The renewed violence between the Balanda and Azande communities erupted in Tambura County on April 24, 2024.

The clashes have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, displacing over 50,000 people, primarily women and children. Reports indicate killings, kidnappings, disappearances, and property destruction.

The conflict has roots in June 2021, pitting the Balanda community, allegedly backed by the opposition SPLA-IO forces, against the Azande community, reportedly supported by SSPDF troops under James Nando.

This month, over 600 SSPDF forces were deployed around Tambura, leading to the arrest of 19 individuals linked to the SPLA-IO.
