JUBA – The Deputy Chairperson for the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Warrap State, Mabil Ater Deng, on Friday issued a desperate plea for humanitarian intervention.
Speaking to Sudans Post, Ater urged aid organizations to immediately provide food assistance to thousands facing hunger across the state.
“People in Warrap are suffering. We have internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by local conflict, vulnerable people with disabilities, and elderly members within host communities who urgently need food aid,” he said.
“I call upon the people of Warrap and humanitarian organizations to step up and help,” he added.
Deng highlighted the additional strain placed on resources by the influx of returnees fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
Warrap has successfully integrated 17,000 returnees into counties like Twic and Gogrial West, but their arrival adds pressure to an already stretched system.
“Our offices see roughly 2,000 returnees daily, all seeking food assistance. The total number of returnees from Sudan stands at 19,223, while we have 388,305 IDPs within the state,” he added.
With a sense of urgency, Deng warned of a potential famine gripping Warrap in the coming months.
“We need support not just in Kuajok, but throughout Warrap,” he emphasized.
“Even after integrating returnees, they remain vulnerable and require food aid in their respective counties. We believe a lack of intervention will lead to widespread starvation across Warrap State,” he added.
Warrap’s annual flooding further exacerbates food insecurity, making the need for immediate action even more critical.
