The unrest began after eight inmates escaped the prison on June 11th, with five later recaptured. In response, the prison administration issued a one-day lockdown for all inmates.
“The inmates reacted negatively and damaged their cells, triggering a strike within the prison,” said a statement from the Warrap State government. “They refused to cooperate with wardens and showed disrespect to the administration.”
Deputy Governor Aluel Garang Garang led a delegation to the prison to quell the unrest. Additional security forces were also deployed to regain control.
“The situation is now under control,” the statement continued. “Broken doors have been replaced and welded shut.”
As a gesture of goodwill, the Deputy Governor donated two bulls, 20 bags of assorted food items, 25 dozen sets of eating utensils, medical supplies, and security lights.
A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Manyang-Kuel Central Prison houses over 400 inmates.
