BOR, OCTOBER 17, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The Jonglei-state based civil society watchdog, INTREPID South Sudan, with its partner Canada Fund for Local Initiatives on Monday launched a new project to enhance civic space in the state.
The project is aimed at widening civic space to enhance participation of youth and women in the transitional processes.
Speaking at the launching of the project Bol Deng Bol, Executive of Direct of INTREPID South Sudan, said there is need for widening of the civic and political space as South Sudan heads towards its first poll in December 2024.
“There is a very hugged gap in civic space particularly in Jonglei state and this gap is talking about a space not being free having been intimidated, members of civil society, the journalists have been subjected including some professional group like workers trade union,” he said.
“If anybody who is giving out a speech who is free to express the opinion, if media organizations are giving out information that is needed by the public and they are being suppressed by means of intimidation, arrest and toucher all these things had happened in Jonglei state,” he added.
Bol said the project will enhance the knowledge of the civil population on the transitional process as the country heads toward elections.
Jonglei state police commissioner, Major-General Elia Costa said civil society organizations always advocate for the rights of vulnerable communities.
“For the civil society, we know what they are doing. They are the ones supporting the vulnerable people who have no voice. So, you are our best friends, but we have our mandates also, the implementation of the law,” General Costa said.
He called to the civil society to advocate for the rights of others in accordance with the law to avoid conflict with the law.
Michael Mading Akueth, Chairperson of Jonglei State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) urged civil society activists to respect laws while advocating for the rights of others.
“If you are an activist you should say what is written in the constitution of South Sudan and quote where exactly it is. So, that if there is anything affecting you, it could affect you within your right,” he said.
He further urged the citizens that there is limit of there rights adding that they should expressed their voices in harmony with South Sudan laws.
