WAU, JULY 4, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Thousands of Presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit’s supporters in Western Bahr el Ghazal State have turned out in red T-shirts to receive the head of state as he arrives from the capital Juba for a political rally today.

Kiir who is also the chairman of the ruling SPLM party is expected to address one of the biggest political rallies since independence marking beginning of his campaign for president in the elections slated for December 2024.

“Wau turns red and all of us we are wearing the red T-shirt to receive our leader President Salva Kiir Mayardit and have come out in thousands as you can see because we want him to win the elections of 2024 by a landslide,” said one supporter wearing red T-shirt.

Kiir was greeted by a crowd of supporters at Wau airport, who cheered and waved SPLM and South Sudan flags as he disembarked from an Ethiopian Airways plane.

Kiir has not yet stated if he is running for president, but he was last December nominated by the SPLM during a three-day national convention conducted in Juba in which his deputies and the secretary general were confirmed.

He is expected to declare his candidacy for president today during the rally.
