Women lawmakers condemn Aweil child rape-to-death incident

South Sudan women lawmakers in the transitional national legislative assembly have condemned last week's incident in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State capital Aweil in which three Sudanese traders raped a 6-year-old child to death sparking anger among residents of Aweil.

JUBA – South Sudan women lawmakers in the transitional national legislative assembly have condemned last week’s incident in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State capital Aweil in which three Sudanese traders raped a 6-year-old child to death sparking anger among residents of Aweil.

“On 3rd of May we were saddened and dismayed by the grave Human rights Abuse committed against a young girl of 6 (six) years in Aweil by a Sudanese trader identified as Sabir Abdalla Abu Sam,” Secretary General of the women parliamentary Caucus Hon. Wait John Dak of Unity State said.

“This is inhuman act constitutes, Rape, murder  and defilement which is punishable in accordance with the Human Right Charter and fully reechoes in the constitution of the Republic of South Sudan,” she added.

While condemning the incident, the lawmaker called on the revitalized transitional government of national unity to put up measures to bring the culprit to justice so that it serves as a strong message to rapists.

“On behalf of the women parliamentary caucus of the Revitalize Transitional National Legislature and that of my own, we condemn this heinous act in strongest term possible,” Hon. Wait said.

“We called on the government of Northern Bahr El Gazal state to employ all necessary legal measures to put the perpetrators on book. Mere Condemn towards these horrendous activities inflicted on young girls and women is not enough, it is painful and disheartening event that we must by all accords to bring to an end,” she added.

The women lawmaker said the group “appreciates every inches of an effort put forth by the Northern Bahr El Gazal Governor to make sure the perpetual is tried in a competent Court without any prejudice.”

“The Caucus is common in Ensuring laws and policies that combat gender-based violence and promote gender equality and women’s rights are fully integrated in to and the outcomes of the state building.

“All country’s institutions and structures at all levels of government should live by protecting the dignity and safety of women and girls.”
