JUBA – Renowned activist Edmund Yakani has issued a strong call to the leaders of the newly reconstituted National Election Commission (NEC) to prioritize impartiality and avoid political interference in their crucial task of overseeing credible and fair elections in South Sudan.
“The young nation’s future hinges on a transparent and unbiased election process,” stated Yakani, who also serves as Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO). “I urge the commission members and leadership to steer clear of party politics and focus solely on administering the elections with utmost integrity.”
Yakani’s statement, obtained by Sudan Post, further emphasizes the responsibility of political parties and leaders to actively contribute to a timely, fair, and credible election.
He urges them to prioritize timely and sufficient funding for the NEC, the National Civil Registration Commission (NCRC), and the Political Parties Commission (PPC), alongside ensuring robust security arrangements throughout the electoral process.
This call for neutrality comes just one day after President Salva Kiir officially swore in the new NEC members. Deputy chairperson Gabriel Gatluak echoed Yakani’s sentiment, appealing to the political leadership to respect the commission’s independence and allow it to function without external influence.
“Though you nominated us, we appeal to you not to interfere in our work. Allow us to do our work and let the people of South Sudan to be the judge,” he said.
Chairperson Abednego Akok outlined the commission’s plan to prioritize comprehensive civic education, ensuring thorough public awareness of the electoral process before the polls.
This commitment to voter education signifies a promising step towards achieving a well-informed and engaged electorate.
In conclusion, Yakani’s call for political neutrality and the commission’s focus on transparency and voter education offer a glimmer of hope for a credible and peaceful electoral process in South Sudan.
It remains crucial for the political leadership and all stakeholders to uphold their responsibilities and contribute to a successful election that reflects the will of the South Sudanese people.
