JUBA – At least 15 people including 9 women have been killed in an attack on a village in Gogrial East county by armed criminals from Unity state’s Mayom country, according to a statement extended to Sudans Post by Gogrial East Commissioner Peter Ayom Bul.

This comes one month after reports suggested that President Kiir’s security advisor Tutkew Gatluak had transported arms from Sudan to Mayom County in preparation for launch of a Sudan-like Rapid Support Forces there.

In the statement, Mr. Ayom said the attack occurred exactly at Mangol-Apuk village on Thursday morning. He said the armed criminals later on set the village and surrounding areas alight before running away with a good number of cattle.

“It is with great sense of shock and sorrow to inform the public about the barbaric attack launch on unarmed civil population of Gogrial East by Bul Nuer armed civilians,” the commissioner said in the statement.

“The attack occurred at Mangol-Apuk on 27th May at 4:50 AM. The tragic attack loss the lives of 15 people, 9 are women and children. At the same note, 17 people are wounded and the entire market of Mangol and the other villages that include Nyiel, Kuany-Luang and Adol burnt into ashes despite all the properties. A huge number of cattle are raided and couples of households are displaced,” the statement added.

The top county government official said the “attack is meant to deter and derail the progress of the peace agreement and we will never let the enemies of peace in the grass root defeat the Government.”

“I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in this senseless killing and wish a quick recovery to those wounded.

“Lastly, I am calling on the civilians of Gogrial East to remain calm and wait for the interventions of the Government. Government is the strength of the civilians, we are working hand in hand to ensure the safety of the civilians.”
