JUBA – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reconstituted the state transitional legislative assembly of the country’s oil-rich Upper Nile state bringing the number of state parliaments reconstituted to four.

The reconstitution of the state parliament mark a very crucial step in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement as the delay in the reconstitution of state parliament has caused international and regional concerns.

In a presidential decree read out on the state-own South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Kiir appointed 100 politicians representing various party signatories to the revitalized peace agreement signed by him and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny in 2018.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit appointed Chuol Dep Kier of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Government (SPLM-IG) party as the speaker of the Upper Nile state parliament.

The South Sudanese head of state had also reconstituted the legislative assemblies of Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria and Lakes states bringing the number of the state parliaments reconstituted per the revitalized peace deal to four.
