JUBA – At least one person has been killed and three others – including a woman – have been wounded in an attack on a vehicle by suspected Misseriya militiamen along the Abyei-Amiet Market Road, the Abyei Special Administrative Area’s government said Sunday.

In a statement, the government said the attack took place at 10:20AM when Misseriya armed men opened fire on two Toyota pickup vehicles just half a kilometer away from Amiet Market resulting in the killing of the unnamed person and wounding of the three other people.

“Today Sunday 18th September, 2022, at around 10:20 A.M, elements from Agaira Misseriya Armed Group ambushed and attacked (2) Toyota Pickup Vehicles at Kol-Nyang (Haffir) on Abyei – Amiet Market Road; (1/2) half kilometers from the Market,” the statement said.

“(1) One innocent civilian was killed on the spot and (3) three wounded including (1) one woman, in unfortunate repeated incident of which (1) one was rushed to Todac UNISFA Level (1) Clinic and the other (2) to UNISFA Level (2) Clinic in Abyei Town,” the statement added.

While issuing condolence to the family of the citizen killed, the statement condemned the attack and urged the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to live up to mandate and protect civilians.

“The Abyei Area Administration therefore condemns this barbaric attack in strongest terms possible and calls upon UNISFA and the INBATT (1), as a concerned battalion, to strictly live up to its mandate, responsibilities and render effective protection to the civilians along the road,” the statement said.

“Once again, our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, Ngok Dinka Community and the entire South Sudanese People; may his precious soul rest in eternal peace and wish a quick recovery to the rest of the victims,” it added.
