JUBA – A South Sudanese activist is calling on the unity government to give 35 percent of appointments to women in yet to be reconstituted states Legislative Assemblies and Local Government Legislative Councils.
The September 2018 revitalized peace deal states that all stakeholders should allocate 35% of their share of positions at all levels of government to women.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) made this call in a statement extended to Sudans Post on Sunday.
“We are receiving credible information from reliable sources that some of the parties want to compromise in enforcing the 35% for women during the state legislative assembly and Local Government Legislative Councils reconstitution,” Edmund said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“The women should be appointed to posts ranging from parliamentarians, Speakers, Deputy Speaker, Chairpersons of outstanding committees,” it said.
“Since some parties have violated the 35% for women during their state cabinet appointments, they should compensate the women of the party by beyond 35% for women appointments at the state legislative assembly,” it stressed.
It explained that the role of women in local government decision making is essential for the improvement of services delivery and practice of good governance.
“CEPO is closely observing the parties’ nominations for state legislative assembly and Local Government Legislative Councils appointments,” it added.
