JUBA, JULY 26, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – A senior government official in Jonglei State has said that armed youth from Yuai and Duk counties on Tuesday launched attack on Nanaam Area of Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and that fighting was still ongoing as of this afternoon.

“Armed youth from Yuai on Tuesday went and attacked the area of Nanaam that is in Greater Pibor, and they were joined by a few youths from Dut County,” one state official in Bor told Sudans Post on condition of anonymity today.

“What we have heard is that the fighting is still going on in that area and there are no casualties reported yet because of network issues,” he said, adding that the government in Jonglei was “about to contact the authorities in Pibor.”

ACTIVIST CALLS FOR END TO FIGHTING

When contacted by Sudans Post, Chairperson of Jonglei Civil Society Network and Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan Bol Deng Bol expressed disappointment over the fighting and called an immediate end to it.

“This is happening amidst Peace talk involving the two States, unfortunately.  Disappointment after another. This ought to STOP. There is a need for urgent intervention to put to halt this aggression,” Bol said.

He urged on the government to deploy security forces to Gadiang to curb attacks between Jonglei and Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

“I want to remind us that using Gadiang as a military base can help in curbing this perpetual communal violence,” he said.

“It is in a strategic location and can spot and stop ill-intending elements from either GPAA or Jonglei State,” he added.

I am also urging those youths to come back home as soon as the two rivals states have a plan for peace and reconciliation at the moment.
To me, let not the physical violence be priority and let us all thriving for another means like dialogue to put this senseless communalism to an end
