JUBA – Authorities in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State are working with butchers to stabilize beef prices in the market, an official said on Friday.
“We visited markets in Juba to understand the problems facing butchers, we visited Suk-Libya, Jebel and Konyo-konyo markets. We have challenges especially on beef prices which have increased,” the state Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism minister, Alex Lotief Elia told reporters in Juba.
The minister, who held a market tour, said they will persuade livestock traders to reduce beef prices.
“We do not want the price for beef to be very high because we have a lot of livestock, we want to have stability in beef prices,” stressed Lotief.
According to the minister, there is a plan to establish a beef market in the state.
“As the Ministry of Animal Resources, we have formed a steering committee to re-organize the butchers, both foreigners and nationals, we want to lower the prices of beef in the markets,” he said.
The Juba City Council mayor, Flora Gabriel Modi urged butchers to maintain good hygiene.
