JUBA – Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed the National Elections Commission (NEC) plan to embark on pre-election activities.
The leadership of NEC announced that the election calendar for the 2024 December elections awaits outstanding matters to be addressed before pre-elections activities and making the calendar public.
In a statement, CEPO’s Executive Director, Edmund Yakani called for serious political commitment from the presidency towards the December 2024 elections.
“The trend of extending the political transition period without concrete results for realization of stability has demonstrated the country political leaders’ weakness in respecting their primary responsibility of stabilizing the political situation and this seriously undermines claim of state sovereignty,” said Yakani.
The activist said the transitional government bears the primary responsibility of ensuring elections are held as planned by involving all parties in decision making.
He called for an urgent meeting of the presidency to discuss outstanding issues related to the elections, which should be held at the end of the transitional period.
“From now onwards, any mess up of political decisions on the pathways for holding elections as required will be an act of planting seed for the country’s return to violence. The presidency and political parties have to urgent meet, but the meeting should be inclusive in manner,” Yakani noted.
The activist urged principals of the political parties’ signatories to the 2018 peace agreement to take the remaining time of the extended transitional period for opening of civic and political space, allocation of adequate funds for NEC and other bodies, unification of forces, among others.
He said CEPO, in partnership with Ministry of Peace Building and faith-based leaders, will hold a national conference on peaceful and non-violent elections. The forum will bring together political parties and various stakeholders for national commitment for a peaceful and non-violent election.
