JUBA – Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed the establishment of a temporary United Nations base in Rumbek North County of Lakes State, stressing its importance in protecting civilians.
The UN peacekeepers set up a temporary operation in Rumbek North to ensure the protection of civilians and to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid.
The peace keeping mission emphasized that the establishment of the temporary operation base in Rumbek North County aims to enhance security and protect civilians residing between Rumbek North of Lakes State, Unity, and Warrap States.
CEPO said the base will create a conducive environment for civilian protection.
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, said the deadly armed conflict between communities of Lakes state and Warrap state requires urgent intervention of the UN on matters of civilian protection and respect for human rights.
He said the temporary base is one of the effective strategies for protection of civilians under UN Charter provision on the responsibility to protect civilians.
The temporary base is located in Maper at the junction between Lakes, Unity, and Warrap States.
This area, according to UNMISS, has been a major concern in terms of security for quite some time.
