JUBA – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi on Friday invited President Salva Kiir Mayardit, his South Sudanese counterpart, to attend a climate change conference scheduled for November in the Egyptian Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh.
Egypt was in November last year officially selected to host the UN Climate Change Conference in November 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27) after years of significant work on countering climate change, Egypt newspaper Egypt Today reported at the time.
The conference’s ultimate objective is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations “at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human induced) interference with the climate system.”
South Sudan presidency said the invitation to Kiir from President Al Sisi was delivered by the Egyptian ambassador to South Sudan Amb. Moatez Mostafa Abdelkader during a meeting at the state house J1 this afternoon and that the South Sudanese head of state agreed to attend the conference.
“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit received an invitation from Egyptian President H. E. Abdel Fattah El Sisi to attend a climate change conference scheduled in November this year, in the Egyptian City of Sharm El Sheikh,” the presidency statement reads in part.
“During the meeting, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit conveyed his greetings to his Egyptian Counterpart H.E. Abdel Fattah el Sisi, and promised to attend the conference as scheduled, which is expected to be attended by several Heads of State and Government,” it added.
