Since October, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been on advance against federal Ethiopian forces and captured several areas including along the highway to the capital Addis Ababa, all of which are located in the Afar and Amhara regions.
Last week, and also earlier this week, federal forces and their regional allies in Afar and Amhara announced that they have regained control of several strategic towns which have been under the TPLF control for the last two months.
In a statement, Billene Seyoum, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s spokeswoman, said there have been a lot of unimaginable atrocities committed by the TPLF in areas of Maikadra, Galicoma, Chena, Antsokia, Gashena, and Agamsa, as they retreated back.
She said continued silence of Western powers on these atrocities, and accusing the Ethiopian government of human rights abuses highlights how the Western countries have politicized the human rights avocation though what she said is double standards.
“Maikadra, Galicoma, Chena, Antsokia, Gashena, [and] Agamsa are a few of the many places TPLF Terrorist Group massacred innocent civilians based on ethnicity,” Seyoum said in a tweet.
“Where is the outrage from the ‘we are concerned’ bloc? Politicizing human rights via double standards is so unbecoming!” she added.
On Tuesday, Seyoum told a news conference in Addis Ababa that the TPLF was committing vandalism as it retreats from several towns it captured in December and that there was evidence of the alleged crimes.

“With a lot of these towns coming under the national defense forces, it is inevitable that there would be a lot of [vandalism] and the TPLF occupation of many towns in the Amhara and the Afar regions has left behind and overwhelming destruction to public and private property as well as many lives,” she said.
“There is evidence emerging across many towns of grave atrocities and human rights abuses being inflicted by the TPLF upon the innocent civilians in those towns. In Gashena, we have reports of mass killings that have been undertaken by the TPLF on innocent civilians,” she added.
She further said that there is similarly “vast reports of rape that are emerging across these towns also occupied by the TPLF.”
