JUBA — Prominent activist Edmund Yakani has said that leaders of the breakaway SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual and Agwelek faction Gen. Johnson Olony are not above the law.

This comes after fighting between forces loyal to each of the two men resulted in an attack on an IDP camp in Panyikang County where at least 17 civilians including women were killed.

In a statement, Yakani urged President Salva Kiir Mayardit to bring the two men to book, arguing that Olony and Gatwech are not above South Sudan’s laws.

“The warlords namely Simon Gatwech and Johnso Olony should know that they are not above the law for continuously waging armed violence that leads to serious human right violations,” Yakani said.

“They will one day be held accountable by the law for this human rights abuses,” he added.

The prominent and outspoken activist further called on the warring parties to embrace dialogue and declare ceasefire to end the suffering of the people in the places where they have been fighting.

“CEPO is urging the conflicting parties in some parts of upper Nile state to ceasefire and resort to the table of negotiations for reaching soft deadl for mitigating their political grievances,” Yakani said.
