High-ranking rebel commander defects to South Sudan government

JUBA – A senior commander from the rebel National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo Swaka has defected to the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Colonel Joseph Lasu Laila, an operation commander in the NAS, announced his allegiance to the government on Wednesday following a meeting with Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony in Juba.

In his statements following the meeting, Lasu cited his advancing age and the presidential amnesty offered by Kiir in 2018 as a reason for his defection.

“I belonged to Cirilo’s rebel group. While stationed in the bush, I experienced an incident that resulted in six broken bones. My role in the field was difficult, and the work seemed never-ending. At 54 years old, I’m tired of military life,” Lasu said.

“Following President Kiir’s call for those in the bush to return for peace, I’m here seeking peace and a new life. The demands of military service are too much for me at my age. If possible, I’d like to transition to a civilian role, such as in the police force or prison service,” he added.

Meanwhile Governor Emmanuel welcomed Lasu’s decision, reiterating the government’s open-door policy for rebel forces.

“I commend him for forsaking rebellion and accepting President Kiir’s call for peace,” Anthony said. “The government’s doors remain open to any holdout groups intending to join the government’s efforts on peace, reconciliation, and dialogue to alleviate the suffering of the people.”

A member of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party faction, Governor Emmanuel assured Lasu of a safe transition and immediate integration into the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

“We assure you of the government’s commitment to your safety and integration into the SSPDF,” the governor stated.

“You will be given the opportunity to discuss your declaration with the top leadership under General Kiir, the supreme commander of all regular forces,” he added.
