BOR – A high-level peace committee established by the Jonglei state governor earlier this month has concluded a series of peace dialogues in Lankien, Nyirol County, addressing a community conflict that has led to fatalities and injuries.
The state officials dispatched to Lankien on November 5 conducted peace dialogues between the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities.
Speaking to Sudans Post yesterday, Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuei said both communities reached a mutual agreement to uphold peace and reconciliation.
“We started the meeting in town because this is where the incident began. We reconciled [the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities] and then proceeded to Tut Majhok where the Chie Puol community was based, and we held a peaceful meeting. The next day, we went to the Dumien community and did the same,” said Bol.
“On Monday, we brought both communities together to resolve all issues. They have agreed that there will be no further fighting or revenge killings,” the top local government official further noted in the interview.
The commissioner said both communities have committed to blood compensation and identified key suspects involved in the violence, which resulted in nine deaths and left 24 others wounded.
“The two communities have agreed to make immediate blood compensation, to move forward, and to live together as brothers. They also agreed to bring all perpetrators,” Bol said.
Makuei commended the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities for their commitment to achieving lasting peace and urged the state government to provide proper facilities for detaining suspects within the county.
“Currently, we only have a container here, which is inadequate for holding suspects for extended periods. Detaining someone for one to five months in such conditions is difficult, as it can get very hot and is unsuitable,” Bol stated.
The high-level committee is expected to return to the Jonglei state capital on Tuesday to brief the state government on the mission’s outcomes.
