JUBA – The University of Juba has issued an administrative order banning all political rallies within the University campuses that it says disturb lectures and threatened to suspend or dismiss those who would not comply.
In a statement issued and seen by Sudans Post, the Juba University Senate said the ban aims to end causes of what it said is threatening the academic stability of the country’s prestigious University.
“The Senate meeting No. 218 held on October 29th and October 30th 2020 deliberated among others on the causes and sources of the unrests which are threatening the academic stability of the University,” it said.
“The Senate, concerned with the high-level noise coming from political rallies resolved [that] political rallies cease anywhere on the campus with immediate effect,” it added.
It further threatened that “Any student who contravenes this resolution would be suspended or dismissed from the University.”
On 31 October 2020, the administration dismissed fourteen students and suspended fourteen others for taking part in last week’s protest.
Last week, a handful of students from the University of Juba took to the streets to protest ‘unlawful’ restrictions imposed by the campus administration including preventing entry for students who have not paid their academic tuition fees.
A week earlier, the university administration issued a circular informing the campus security’s staff to prevent students who have not paid tuition fees from accessing the learning environment.
