JUBA – Kenyans have made fun of President Salva Kiir Mayardit for his use of Rwanda airline after the president arrived in the capital Nairobi for inauguration of President-Elect William Ruto, with some asking as to if South Sudan has no national air carrier.
On Monday, the president travelled aboard RwandAir to Nairobi where Ruto was to be sworn into office on Tuesday.
His arrival was announced by the Kenyan foreign ministry on Twitter.
“H.E Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, has arrived in the Country to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-Elect H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto. He was received by Amb. Matwanga and Amb. George Orina,” Kenya’s foreign office wrote on its Twitter handle.
But the news of President Kiir’s arrival were met with mixed reactions by Kenyans on twitter with one user asking as to why the president kept using Rwanda Airline when South Sudan is an independent country.
“Is it that South Sudan doesn’t have a national carrier or what is happening. President [Kiir] onboard Rwanda air flight,” the user named Kevin Kiumbe replied to the foreign ministry’s statement announcing President Kiir’s arrival in Kenya.
Another user mocked the president for arriving ‘earlier’ and arriving on a Rwanda passenger plane.
“Seems the guys have not even purchased a presidential jet,” he said. “This is too much shame. And why is he arriving early yet Kenya is just next door?”
Another user said President Kiir “has never missed any national event in Kenya, I doubt if there’s anything serious that ever happens in South Sudan.”
