JUBA – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has approved a bill raising members of parliament’s monthly salary to 800,000 South Sudanese Pounds or roughly 2000 United States Dollars, according to the speaker of parliament Jemma Nunu Kumba.
In January, lawmakers passed a bill increasing their monthly salary from 9,400 South Sudanese pounds to 800,000 South Sudanese Pounds (around $2000), sparking criticisms from among members of the public.
Speaking during a parliamentary sitting at Freedom Hall on Wednesday, speaker of parliament Kumba said the salary increment has been approved by President Kiir and is effective from March 2022.
“The emoluments and privileges of the members of the Transitional National Legislature Act 2022 have been ascended to by His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit, and it is now a law,” Kumba said.
