JUBA – South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has assured former National Security Service (NSS) chief General Akol Koor Kuc and his family of their safety, following a high-level security meeting convened on Friday morning to address tensions that led to gunfire in Juba the previous night.
The emergency meeting, held at Kiir’s residence, included senior security officials such as Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs Tut Gatluak, Chief of Defense Forces General Santino Deng Wol, Chief of Military Intelligence, and the Director General of the Internal Security Bureau (ISB).
A senior security official who spoke to Sudans Post said the meeting successfully calmed the situation.
“The president chaired a crucial security meeting this morning, which resolved all outstanding tensions. Calm has been restored in Juba, and General Akol and his family have been assured of their safety,” he said.
Another security official who attended the meeting stressed its significance in stabilizing the capital.
“Today’s discussions brought together the country’s top security leaders. Their coordinated efforts, under the president’s guidance, have ensured that the situation is now under control,” the official told Sudans Post.
The incident, which unfolded during an attempted arrest of Akol, sparked fears of further escalation. However, government representatives commended the leadership for swiftly addressing the crisis.
