JUBA — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has said he is saddened by death of citizens as results of devastating floods and that he is working to find a durable solution to the ongoing flooding in the world’s youngest country.

The president made the revelation in a statement in which he expressed solidarity with those affected by floods in Bahr el Ghazal region where at least seven people are said to have died as a result of devastating floods.

“I am alarmed by the news of widespread floods affecting communities in different parts of the country. My office has been informed that seven (7) people have died in Majak-baai, in Northem Bahr el Ghazal State due to floods related drowning,” Kiir said.

“On behalf of the Government, I convey my heartfelt condolences to their families. Today, I also remember and stand in solidarity with families who have lost their loved ones to floods related hazards,” Kiir added.

The president said his government has put its focus on finding a durable but sensible solution that he said would preserve the wetland and at the same time prevent devastating flooding.

“Given the persistent nature of these floods, the government has placed its focus on finding long term solution that will balance flood control and wetland protection,” he said.

“We consider this approach sensible despite the fact that it will not ease the current floods problem immediately,” he added.

Kiir further urged humanitarian partners to intervene as the government works to unveil the solution to the flooding calamity.

“But we hope the measures we are taking will address flooding without creating an ecological imbalance down the road,” he added.

“With thousands of people in dire need presently across the country, I am calling upon our humanitarian partners to work with Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to provide short-term assistance to those affected by these floods as we work to find a permanent solution to these atural disasters,” he added.
