RUMBEK – Authorities in Lakes State are pursuing a suspect responsible for a revenge killing last week in Amongpiny Payam.

The victim was a member of a peace delegation from Panyijiar County, Unity State, according to Lakes State police spokesman Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac who spoke to Sudans Post at his office in the capital Rumbek yesterday.

“[The victim] decided to go to the market on his own to buy some grains but unfortunately, he met this man who attacked him and shot, killing him. [The attacker] also killed another child of 12 years old in crossfire,” he said.

The suspect fled, but security forces brought other delegation members to safety, and they surrendered their weapons.

The bodies of the victims were transported by the Rumbek Central County commissioner.

“This issue was a very tragic incident, and we condemn it in very serious terms,” Maj. Makuac stated, adding that the killing appeared to be revenge for a previous death attributed to individuals from Panyijiar County.

Maj. Makuac urged citizens in border areas of Lakes State to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“I am urging them to keep calm…if they adopt a system of revenge, then automatically it will lead people in a wrong direction,” he said.

He also called on citizens to cooperate with authorities by providing information on suspects.

“They should cooperate to persuade the perpetrator and bring him into the book for investigation and legal procedures,” he concluded.
