JUBA, OCTOBER 13, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – A member lawmaker has appealed to the newly-appointed minister of interior Angelina Teny to reduce the number of traffic police on the streets of the capital Juba and to stop soldiers from asking for lock book.

Jenty Poni Bullen, member of parliament of South Sudan’s transitional parliament on the ticket of Democratic Change (DC) party, was speaking during a parliamentary sitting at the Freedom Hall in Juba on Monday.

“Madam Angelina you are the one in the interior (ministry) position and I don’t want to see soldiers within the town or asking about lock book,” she said in the sitting attended by Mrs. Teny.

“Please reduce traffic police within Juba city,” she added.

Traffic police in Juba

The traffic police in Juba are responsible for enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safety of road users. However, they have been accused of corruption and abuse of authority.

For example, there have been reports of traffic police demanding bribes from drivers, even when they have not committed any traffic violations.

In some cases, traffic police have also been accused of assaulting drivers.

Public outcry over traffic police abuses

The public outcry over traffic police abuse has been growing in recent months. In September 2023, a video went viral on social media showing a traffic police officer assaulting a driver in Juba.

The video sparked widespread outrage, and many people called for the traffic police officer to be held accountable.
